THIS IS WHAT SHE LOOKED LIKE WHEN I FIRST SAW HER.
Early '60s Bambis came with their interior wood....which, at this point in Airstream's history was still real....painted in the "blond" finish that had began to become popular in interior decorating during the late 1950s, mostly in contemporary, atomic-style furniture. This finish consists of applying extremely thinned-down beige colored paint over bare wood, allowing the grain of the wood to still show through. However, this Bambi's owner wanted the natural finish instead, so....all of the cabinets, bed and seating framing, shower and closet walls, etc., were removed, all that wood was stripped of it's paint and sanded, three coats of Spar varnish was applied to all the bare wood and, then, everything was re-installed. We were also asked to remove the white, formica, sliding doors in the storage units, attached to the ceiling above the street side goucho bed, and replace them with custom made doors, which we cut from natural birch ply and finished with Varnish to match the rest of the interior. In addition, most of the original floor tile was in pretty bad shape and had to be removed, and there was damage to the floor at the door, which, had to be repaired, so, that new, vintage looking, chartruse colored, <Armstrong Imperial Texture tile> could be laid. <Click Here>To view photos of the gutted inteior and that newly laid flooring. We also replaced all the old foam cushions with new foam and re-upholstered them with fabric that the client picked out. (If it was my trailer, I would have gone with something more "period" looking, that went along with the vintage tile, venetian blinds and wheel/tire combo.) The stainless steel trim on the stove was also in pretty bad shape, so, we sanded and primed it with etching-primer, then sprayed it with vintage looking, Hammertone Gray paint, and, as you can see in the photos below, it works pretty well.
